Bhutan and the Maldives have few night markets. What they offer instead are everyday markets that show local life.
Bhutan
- Centenary Farmers' Market, Thimphu: the biggest weekend market, with red rice, chillies and cheese.
- Paro Weekend Market: a smaller market in the Paro valley.
The Maldives
- Malé Fish Market: tuna and reef fish straight off the boats.
- Malé Local Market: fruit, vegetables and snacks.
Practical tips
- Bhutan's markets run mainly on weekends and in the morning.
- Malé's markets are best in the morning or late afternoon; check Friday prayer times.
- Hours vary, so check before you go.
