The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, a maze of vaulted lanes in the Beyazıt area of old Istanbul.
What to expect
Hundreds of shops grouped by trade: carpets, ceramics, lanterns, leather, gold and souvenirs. Expect friendly pressure to come into shops and plenty of bargaining.
What to eat
Turkish tea, Turkish delight, baklava and simit from the cafes and vendors inside.
Visitor tips
- It is a daytime market, usually closed on Sundays and public holidays. Check current hours before you go.
- Compare prices in a few shops and bargain.
