Chatuchak Weekend Market is enormous: more than 15,000 stalls across roughly 35 acres, split into 26 numbered sections, with over 200,000 visitors on a typical weekend. Without a plan it is easy to end up tired, overheated and lost. These tips keep it fun.
When to go
The main market runs on Saturday and Sunday, roughly 9 AM to 6 PM. Friday is mostly wholesale with limited stalls, and the plant section opens on Wednesday and Thursday. Arrive early on a weekend morning: it is cooler, quieter and easier to move around.
Getting there
The easiest routes are BTS Mo Chit or MRT Chatuchak Park, both within walking distance of the entrances. Avoid driving, as parking fills up fast.
How to tackle it
- Pick your priorities. The sections group similar goods: clothing and accessories fill much of the market, with handicrafts, ceramics, art, antiques, books, furniture and plants in their own zones.
- Do one loop, then return. Note stalls you like and circle back to buy, so you can compare prices.
- Take breaks. Stop for a cold drink, coconut ice cream or a foot massage between sections.
- Carry cash. Most stalls take only cash, and small notes make bargaining easier.
Bargaining basics
Prices are often flexible at clothing and souvenir stalls. Start politely at a lower price, smile, and be ready to walk away. Fixed-price shops and food stalls are not negotiable.
What to bring
- Comfortable, closed shoes
- A hat, sunscreen and water
- A light bag for purchases
