Pottery Square, Bhaktapur

Pottery Square is the centre of Bhaktapur's ceramic industry. You can see potter's wheels and rows of clay pots drying in the sun, and watch the firing at the back of the square, where mud-covered straw kilns line the edge. Several shops sell the finished pottery.

Potters shape black clay into household pots and jars and inexpensive souvenirs such as animal and bird figures. Pottery is a family job here, so you may see a whole family at work. Ask before photographing the potters. In October, drying rice from the harvest covers much of the open ground.

There are two pottery squares in Bhaktapur, Talako about 500 m southwest of Taumadhi Square and Suryamadhi east of Dattatreya Square. Plan 30 to 45 minutes.

Good to know: Opening hours were not verified, so check locally. October to November and March to April are the pleasant months to visit.
