Boats loaded with guavas at the Bhimruli floating guava market

Bhimruli is Bangladesh's best-known floating guava market, set in the canal country of the Barishal region, sometimes called the Venice of Bengal. Growers bring guavas by boat to the water, and dealers buy wholesale from the boats before the fruit goes on to Dhaka and other cities.

When to go

  • The season is July to August.
  • The market runs every day of the week, opening early in the morning and closing in the evening.
  • Bhimruli is busiest from about 12 noon to 3 PM, so aim to arrive by 11 AM.
  • A separate boat market at Atghar and Kuriana is reported to run only on Mondays and Wednesdays.

What you see

  • Boats stacked with guavas, bargaining between growers and dealers, and small boats weaving between larger ones.
  • Guavas are sold wholesale by weight, reported at Tk 250 to 300 per 40 kg in one report.
  • Roughly 20,000 local households are reported to supply the area's guava trade.

Getting there

A common route is the overnight launch from Dhaka's Sadarghat to Barishal, then a vehicle to the Banaripara ghat and a rented boat to the market. Flights to Barishal are also available. Lodging is available in Pirojpur or Barishal.

Good to know

Bring a life vest, rain gear and water. The coordinates are approximate for the market area, and the market's exact position varies by canal. This is a trading market rather than a tourist attraction, so visit respectfully.
