Floating vegetable market on Dal Lake, Srinagar

On Dal Lake, locally called the Raad, farmers set out around 4 AM in small boats to sell vegetables grown on the lake: leafy greens, water chestnuts, onions, tomatoes and cucumbers. The trading is largely over by 7 to 7:30 AM, as sunlight reaches the water.

Visitors reach the vendors by shikara boat. Other boats sell flowers, saffron, shawls, dhurries, Kashmiri kahwa tea and snacks. Barter is still practised with local traders alongside cash. The best season is roughly March to October. The article I used describes it as an unorganised gathering of individual sellers, and says its turnover makes it one of the biggest wholesale markets of its kind.
