Fresh flowers at the Koyambedu flower market, Chennai

Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex covers about 295 acres on the outskirts of Chennai. Its first phase is the perishables market, with roughly 3,100 shops in all, selling mainly vegetables, fruit and flowers, and a block set aside for flower shops. Hours are anti-social by design: wholesale runs from 10pm to 10am and retail from 2am to 2pm. It is a working trade market rather than a tourist stop, so go early and expect crowds and heavy vehicles.
