Mapusa's market day is Friday, a tradition that goes back to the village farming system, when goods arrived from every district to one central area. Today the market sells vegetables and locally grown fruit, spices, clothing and plants, dried and fresh fish (with a dedicated fish street), and several local banana varieties.
It is also a place for everyday services such as barbers and appliance repairs. Unlike Anjuna's flea market, which is aimed at visitors, this is mainly a market for locals, so it works well for a half-day of browsing in the morning.
