Flower sellers at Mallick Ghat Flower Market in Kolkata

Mullick Ghat Flower Market sits on Strand Bank Road on the Hooghly River with Howrah Bridge as its backdrop. It is open around the clock, but the busiest time is just before dawn, when fresh flowers arrive in large baskets from farms across the region and wholesalers bargain with florists. Flowers from here supply Kolkata's weddings, festivals, funerals and temples.

The ghat was built in 1855 by Rammohan Mullick and named after his father, Nimai Charan Mullick, on the site of an earlier ghat from 1793. Steamships once left from here carrying pilgrims to Puri. It is a popular spot for photographers. Be respectful with cameras and watch for porters carrying heavy loads.
