Dakgalbi, the specialty of Chuncheon (illustrative)

Myeongdong Dakgalbi Alley in downtown Chuncheon is the home of dakgalbi, spicy chicken stir-fried on an iron griddle with cabbage and onions. Dakgalbi shops opened one by one in the 1970s and 1980s, forming the alley, and it became a favourite with students and soldiers because it was cheap and filling.

What to expect

A lane of restaurants on both sides, each cooking the dish on a table griddle. Hours and closing days vary by restaurant.

What to eat

Dakgalbi, either iron-plate or charcoal-grilled, finished with fried rice. Chuncheon makguksu cold noodles are another local dish.
