Shilin Night Market is the biggest and best-known night market in Taipei, and for many first-time visitors to Taiwan it is the definitive night market experience. It sits in Shilin District, a short walk from Jiantan MRT Station.

What to expect

The market has two main parts. The first is the covered market building on Danan Road, where the basement food hall is packed with stalls serving classic Taiwanese snacks. The second is the maze of surrounding streets and alleys, lined with clothing, accessories, toys, carnival-style games and more street food. Prices on non-food items are often negotiable.

What to eat

Shilin is above all a food destination. Look for oyster omelets, stinky tofu, fried chicken cutlets, sausage wrapped in sticky rice, stir-fried cuttlefish, herbal pork rib soup, scallion pancakes and shaved ice.

Visitor tips

  • Most vendors open between 4 and 5 PM, and the busiest period is roughly 7 to 10 PM.
  • Visit on a weekday or arrive early if you dislike crowds.
  • Bring cash; many stalls do not accept cards.
  • Getting there: take the Tamsui-Xinyi Line (red) to Jiantan Station and walk a few minutes.
