Golden Gai

Golden Gai is a tiny grid of lantern-lit alleys in Shinjuku packed with some 200 to 300 minuscule bars, many seating fewer than ten people. It grew out of the postwar black market and is now one of Tokyo's best-known nightlife spots. Most bars open in the evening; some charge a cover, so check the sign at the door.
