Kamitori and Shimotori Arcades (Kumamoto)
Kumamoto's two big covered arcades, with local restaurants, horse-meat dishes, cafes and street musicians.
Kamitori (about 600 m) and Shimotori (about 511 m) are Kumamoto's main covered arcades, either side of Torimachi-suji and within walking distance of Kumamoto Castle. Kamitori mixes older shops with newer boutiques, tea shops and cafes. Shimotori is the busier of the two, with fashion and a gourmet strip of local restaurants, izakaya and cafes, and street musicians. Kumamoto specialties to look for include Aso akaushi beef and basashi horse meat.
