Mal Bazaar, the cattle market in Karakol

Karakol's Sunday animal market (Mal Bazaar) sells sheep, cows, horses and tack, and gives a window into rural Kyrgyz life. It runs on Sunday mornings, so arrive before 9am. It is for watching, not for buying livestock, and can be muddy in wet weather.

The central Karakol bazaar is a friendlier, smaller version of Bishkek's Osh Bazaar and sells honey, kurut, dairy, seasonal apples in autumn and felt slippers from nearby villages; it is best in the morning.

Tips: Wear closed shoes, stand back from loading ramps, and ask before photographing people with their animals. Coordinates are approximate.
