Crowds at Keelung Miaokou Night Market

Keelung Miaokou Night Market, named for the temple (miaokou) at its entrance, is among the best-known food markets in Taiwan. It lines Ren 3rd Road and Ai 4th Road beside Dianji Temple in Keelung, a port city about 40 minutes from Taipei.

What to expect

Hundreds of stalls and small eateries are arranged in rows, with numbered stalls that make it easy to find the famous names. The seafood is fresh thanks to the harbour, and the market keeps up a busy, communal atmosphere into the night.

What to eat

The nutrition sandwich (fried bread filled with cucumber, ham and sweet sauce) and Keelung-style tempura are the signature orders. Also look for crab dishes, seafood congee, fish ball soup and sweet bean-based desserts.

Visitor tips

  • Keelung is often rainy, so bring an umbrella; the market is partly covered.
  • Getting there: about a 10-minute walk from Keelung Station, which is reached by TRA train from Taipei.
  • Many stalls open earlier in the day and close late at night; check before you go.
