Namak Mandi (Peshawar)
Peshawar's walled-city food street for charsi tikka, mutton karahi and barbecue, best after sunset.
Namak Mandi is a food street inside Peshawar's walled city, near Ashraf Road, Khyber Bazaar and Qissa Khwani Bazaar. It is known for mutton karahi and barbecued meat: whole lamb legs and chickens hang outside restaurants on both sides of the street. A Friday Times article counts more than two dozen tikka restaurants, naming Shinwari Tikka House and Charsi Tikka Wala, and mentions qehwa stalls, Peshawari chappal sellers, medicine shops and gem dealers on the same streets. Dry fruit vendors also work here.
The best time to visit is after sunset, when the area lights up and the smell of grilled meat is strongest. Several restaurants claim to be the original charsi tikka place, so expect friendly disputes. Check current local conditions and travel advice before visiting Peshawar.
