Pingjiang Road in Suzhou

Pingjiang Road runs about 1,606 m beside the Pingjiang canal in the Gusu District of Suzhou's Old Town, in a historic district of about 0.4 square kilometres. The street takes its name from Pingjiang, the Southern Song name for Suzhou, and appears on a 1229 map. It was named one of China's first famous historical and cultural streets in 2009.

Visitors find bookshops, teahouses, local opera and storytelling theatres, and traditional Suzhou houses along the water. About 3 km of canals run through the district, with 18 stone bridges and around 51 smaller alleys crossing the main street. The Couple's Retreat Garden, part of the UNESCO-listed Classical Gardens of Suzhou, is nearby, and Xiangmen Station on Metro Line 1 is within walking distance.
