Pushkar Camel Fair
Rajasthan's annual livestock and pilgrimage fair beside Pushkar Lake, held around Kartik Purnima.
The Pushkar Camel Fair is one of India's largest camel, horse and cattle fairs. It begins in the Hindu month of Kartik and ends on Kartik Purnima, usually in late October or early November, and runs for several days on the banks of Pushkar Lake near Ajmer, Rajasthan.
Besides livestock trading, it is a Hindu pilgrimage season and has handicraft stalls selling bracelets, clothing and textiles, plus contests such as camel races, tug-of-war and a longest-moustache competition. The fair draws over 200,000 visitors. Dates change each year with the lunar calendar, so confirm them before you plan a trip. Book accommodation well ahead.
