Stalls at the market in Jaffna city centre

Jaffna Market sits right in the centre of the city, and the road leading to it is lined with dried fish shops. Most of what is sold is small-batch and very local: mor milagai (dried chillies marinated in spiced buttermilk), kadalaimaa sweetmeats made from roasted gram flour and cardamom, panaddu (a sticky snack of sweetened dried palmyrah pulp), palmyrah flour, odiyal chips, and baskets and bags woven from palmyrah fibre.

It is also a good place for fruit cordials, dried fish such as paraw and sprats, and orange dried prawns. Expect strong smells near the dried fish shops, and chatty, persuasive vendors. Opening hours are not confirmed in the source I used, so check locally and go in the morning.
