Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market
Kathmandu's main wholesale fruit and vegetable market, with marigold garlands and dried chillies on the side.
Kalimati is the main wholesale market for fruit and vegetables in Kathmandu. It was set up in 1987 as a wholesale market place, and a 2002 newspaper report described stalls for 300 wholesale traders and a retail section where small traders sell from baskets. Wholesale lots are sold in bulk, so as a visitor you are mostly here to watch the trade: trucks arriving, sacks of produce changing hands and prices being called out.
A travel guide lists it as selling fresh produce, marigold garlands and dried chillies, open daily from very early morning until evening. Those hours come from an older guide, so check locally, and go in the early morning when the wholesale trade is busiest. Wear closed shoes and expect crowds, porters and vehicles.
