Nazirartek Dry Fish Yard
Bangladesh's largest dried-fish (shutki) yard on the beach at Cox's Bazar, with drying racks and traders from October to March.
Hidden Gems
Local Delicacies
Nazirartek is the country's largest shutki (dried fish) processing yard, on the beach near the Cox's Bazar airport. Fish is laid out on racks and nets to dry in the sun, then sold wholesale and to shops in the town.
Season
Processing starts in October and continues through February or March, weather permitting. The yard is much busier in these months.
What happens here
- A 2015 Daily Star report counted about 2,000 traders and some 20,000 labourers in the season, so treat the numbers as dated.
- Species include chhuri, laitta, rupchanda, chingri and others.
- Shutki is sold to tourists at shops around the Old Burmese Market, Laboni beach and Jhinuk Market in Cox's Bazar.
Good to know
- The smell is strong. Go in the morning for the driest air and best light.
- This is a working industrial site, not a tourist market. Ask before photographing workers.
- Hours and access were not confirmed; check locally. The coordinates are approximate.
- Reports have raised concerns about preservatives used in some shutki, so buy from shops you trust.
