Main hall of Panjshanbe Bazaar in Khujand, Tajikistan

Panjshanbe means Thursday in Tajik, the day Khujand's trade historically took place. The market is always busy and draws locals and shoppers from nearby villages. Its main pavilion mixes classicism, Stalinist Empire style and oriental influences, with a domed portal and an arched, column-lined hall. The ground floor is the grocery area with fruit, vegetables, bread and spices; the upper level has clothing, electronics and household goods.

Tips: It stands in central Khujand opposite the Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum, near East Street where minibuses run across the city. Current opening days and hours are not given in our sources, so check locally. Coordinates are approximate.
