Taichung Second Market

The Japanese colonial government built the market in 1917 as the second of five planned markets in Taichung, and it was first called Shintomicho Market. Most nearby residents were Japanese then, so it sold higher-end food and clothing and also handled wholesale fruit and vegetables. Extra buildings added later fully surround the original hall.

Today the market is known for a wide range of Taiwanese food. It has 331 vendors: 54 stores, 150 permanent stalls and 107 temporary stalls. One ba-wan stall is listed in the Michelin Guide.
