The Afghan Bazaar is held at weekends in a neutral zone on the Panj River, the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, in Ishkashim (a similar market has also run at Khorog). Goods are mostly Tajik, Chinese and Iranian: household items, textiles, clothing and hardware. There is little uniquely Afghan merchandise, so come for the experience.

According to one travel guide no visa or special permit is needed, only registration on entry, but rules and border access change, so confirm locally before travelling.

Tips: Few people speak Russian or English. Locals are friendly and may share food. Coordinates are approximate.
